Clayton McWhorter, Nashville health care pioneer, dies at 82

NASHVILLE (AP) - R. Clayton McWhorter, a businessman and philanthropist who helped pioneer health care in Nashville, has died at the age of 82.

Courtney Hise with Mount Olivet Funeral Home in Nashville said McWhorter died Saturday.

According to media reports, McWhorter led Hospital Corporation of America as CEO from 1985 to 1987, the same year he co-founded HealthTrust Inc., where he served as CEO until 1995.

In 1996, he launched Clayton Associates, an investment firm that provides venture capital to startup companies.

Nashville Mayor Megan Barry said in a statement that McWhorter had a lasting impact upon the community.

Mr. McWhorter was among the inaugural inductees of the Tennessee Health Care Hall of Fame in 2015.

The McWhorter School of Pharmacy at Samford University was named after him in 1995.
