J. Alexander’s promotes chief financial officer

J. Alexander’s LLC, operator of J. Alexander’s restaurants and Stoney River Legendary Steak restaurants, has announced the promotion of Mark A. Parkey to vice president and CFO. He was most recently vice president and controller of J. Alexander’s Corporation.

Parkey joined J. Alexander’s Corporation in January 1993 as director of finance. Since then, he has been promoted to controller (1997) and vice president and controller (1999). Parkey is an active Certified Public Accountant and a graduate of Harding University. Prior to joining J. Alexander’s, he held positions as audit manager with Ernst & Young and Steele, Carter, and Martin in Jackson.

VU’s Stallworth Hospital names medical director

Jeffery Johns, M.D., has been named medical director of Vanderbilt Stallworth Rehabilitation Hospital, effective Aug. 12. He has also been appointed associate professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R).

He comes to Vanderbilt from Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., where he was associate medical director and medical director of the Spinal Cord Injury Program.

Johns is board certified in PM&R and sub-specialty board certified in spinal cord injury medicine.

A graduate of Duke University School of Medicine, Johns completed a PM&R residency and was chief resident at Medical College of Virginia Hospitals and Physicians of Virginia Commonwealth University Health System.

Vanderbilt Stallworth Rehabilitation Hospital, opened in 1993, is an 80-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital that offers comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation services.

Insight Genetics announces 4 hires

Insight Genetics has announced the addition of four team members:

  • David Burg as associate director, business development
  • Dan Bailey as senior associate, new product planning
  • Tyler Nielsen, research associate III
  • Lindsay Chatfield, research associate I

As associate director of business development, Burg will lead the sales and marketing programs of Insight Genetics’ CLIA-certified laboratory, Insight Molecular Labs. Prior to joining Insight Genetics, Burg was regional sales director for Response Genetics, Inc., where he was responsible for the sale of predictive biomarker assays covering 26 western states. Earlier in his career, he was senior executive oncology account manager with GlaxoSmithKline.

As senior associate of new product planning, Bailey will lead the management and administration of Insight Genetics’ proprietary Biomarker Decision Support System and intellectual property portfolio. Bailey interned with Insight Genetics while completing his MBA at Vanderbilt University’s Owen Graduate School of Management. Before pursuing his MBA, he was a technical services engineer for Epic Systems Corporation. Bailey earned his B.S. in biomedical engineering from Northwestern University.

Nielsen will design and conduct experiments as part of the Insight Genetics Research & Development team, contributing to both current projects and those in the pipeline. Nielsen earned his master’s biomedical science from Des Moines University.

Chatfield will utilize her molecular biology skills to advance projects within the Insight Genetics Research & Development team, including contributing to multiple National Cancer Institute contracts. Chatfield graduated with honors from Vanderbilt University with degrees in neuroscience and molecular & cellular biology, and a minor in philosophy.

Bank of Nashville hires vice president

The Bank of Nashville, a division of Synovus Bank, has hired Blair Smyly has been named Vice President-Business Banking.

Smyly, who brings more than 12 years of banking and financial services experience, was previously a commercial banking relationship manager at First Bank’s Brentwood office.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss. Smyly is a member of the Young Leaders Council’s inaugural Williamson County class and an upcoming member of the Leadership Brentwood class of 2013-2014.

New physicians join Saint Thomas Health

Dr. Andrew Morse, an interventional cardiologist, and Dr. Brett Inglis, an internal medicine physician and board certified gastroenterologist, have joined St. Thomas Health.

Morse, will see patients at Saint Thomas West and in Paris, Tenn., is board certified in internal medicine, cardiology, and interventional cardiology, scoring in the top 10 percent on all of his national board examinations. Morse completed fellowships in cardiology at the University of North Carolina, interventional cardiology at Emory University and advanced structural interventional cardiology at Northwestern University. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Northwestern after graduating from the VCU School of Medicine.

Inglis who will see patients at St. Thomas Midtown, previously practiced internal medicine and gastroenterology at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. He also served on the Department of Medicine faculty at Hennepin County Medical Center.

Inglis earned his medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Penn., and completed his internal medicine residency and a fellowship in gastroenterology at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia.

Carter Lankford CPAs adds staff accountant

Lindsey Poole has joined Carter Lankford CPAs, P.C. as a staff accountant.

Experienced in the health care industry, Poole will primarily assist with audits, reviews and compilations; process payables and maintain fixed assets for various clients. Additionally, Poole will handle the preparation of client tax returns.

Prior to joining Carter Lankford, Poole worked as a staff accountant at Hertzbach & Company, P.A. in Owings Mills, Md. She is a graduate of Penn State University with a degree in Accounting.

ALS Association names board of directors

The ALS Association Tennessee Chapter, a not-for-profit organization dedicated solely to the fight against Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, has elected members and officers for its 2013-2014 board of directors.

Board members help raise awareness of the work of the ALS Association, serve as advocates and provide strategic guidance for the organization.

Murley to oversee VUSN’s educational informatics

Vanderbilt’s Jerry Murley was recently named assistant dean for Educational Informatics at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing (VUSN).

In his new role he is responsible for implementing new educational informatics ideas, serving as the School’s representative to technology support groups at Vanderbilt and helping solve educational challenges through technology.

Murley has been a member of the School of Nursing faculty for nearly 20 years, involved in many of the school’s technological advancements and learning innovations.

He earned his master of education from Vanderbilt and his bachelor’s degree in history from Memphis State University. Prior to joining Vanderbilt in 1991 he was the president and art director of Mixed Media Inc.

Commissioner honored as ‘Public Health Champion’

Tennessee Health Commissioner John J. Dreyzehner, MD, of Nashville has been named a TMA Quarterly Public Health Champion for 2013. The honor recognizes TMA member physicians for their outstanding public health contributions across the state of Tennessee.

Dreyzehner is being recognized for 20-plus years of service and leadership in clinical and public health at the federal, state and local levels, most recently as an advocate for a healthier Tennessee as state health commissioner.

He has been instrumental, according to the TMA, in tackling a variety of public health issues, particularly the Volunteer State’s prescription drug abuse problem and its consequences. Working with the TMA and other stakeholders, he helped pass new laws aimed at monitoring controlled substance prescriptions and stemming the prevalence of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome.

DVL hires pair of account executives

DVL Public Relations & Advertising has added Rebecca Warren and Tiffany Childress as account executives.

Prior to joining DVL, Warren was an account executive at Lam-Andrews in Nashville and served as chief of staff to the worldwide vice chairman at Burson-Marsteller in Washington, D.C. Warren also founded and served as executive editor of Julep magazine. She is a graduate of George Washington University.

Childress previously worked at Wearwell, Inc. and Ingram Content Group. At DVL, she will work on several agency accounts in the health care, financial, fitness and utility industries. She graduated from Middle Tennessee State University, where she majored in public relations with a minor in marketing.
