Bass, Berry & Sims attorney Jeff Gibson has been named the Tennessee Justice Center’s 2017 Pro Bono Attorney of the Year.

Last year, Gibson and a colleague at Bass provided pro bono representation to a TJC client who had been denied TennCare coverage for nursing home care. The team won the hearing for the client, and the nursing home reimbursed the client’s wife thousands of dollars.

NASHVILLE (AP) — Republican Gov. Bill Haslam's proposal to extend health coverage to 280,000 low-income Tennesseans failed again Tuesday, voted down by a key Senate committee a month after it was defeated in a special legislative session.

NASHVILLE (AP) - Reaction to Republican Gov. Bill Haslam's proposal to expand Medicaid in Tennessee:

"When a state has an opportunity to take power away from the federal government and institute real conservative reform, that is an opportunity that must be taken seriously. NASHVILLE (AP) - Gov. Bill Haslam announced Monday that he has reached a deal to expand Medicaid in Tennessee after more than a year of discussions with federal officials.

The Republican's administration touted the plan as an alternative deal with federal officials. The two-year pilot program, dubbed Insure Tennessee, would provide coverage for the state's uninsured without creating new taxes for Tennesseans.

NASHVILLE (AP) — Tennessee is spending millions of dollars to save emails that could potentially become evidence in lawsuits.

WPLN-FM reports (http://bit.ly/1v6OU8e) during recent budget hearings, Department of Children's Services Commissioner Jim Henry said his agency is spending $865,000 to save emails. The expense stems from a 14-year-old federal lawsuit over the state's treatment of children in foster care.

NASHVILLE (AP) - Tennesseans on Tuesday began signing up for health insurance under an online marketplace run by the federal government.

"It's a pretty exciting day, we're hearing only good things," said Michele Johnson, executive director of the Tennessee Justice Center. "If you're uninsured, regardless of your politics, you're really excited to have a path to coverage."
