Texas can keep its PAC money, misleading ads

If being the “It City” means that a super PAC from Texas elects the city’s mayor, I vote we relinquish the crown.

If the PAC insists in playing in our sandbox, it should learn more about Nashville government, in particular the mayor’s role.

Thousands of Nashvillians received mail from Citizen Super PAC last week.

One card mailed to Nashville residents states that the Texas PAC’s candidate is the “only candidate who will balance the budget.”

Of course, the city’s budget is required to be balanced. It always has, always will.

The mailer condemned all of the candidates except its own.

The next mailing included a personal attack on a candidate who is running in opposition to the PAC’s favorite and makes a claim that the opponent did not vote in the last mayors’ race.

That candidate actually participated in early voting for that election. Early voting must not count in Texas.

I have been involved in the political scene in Middle Tennessee since the age of five, working in John Kennedy’s campaign when my mother led his Maury County efforts, and I have never seen anything like this. Any group anywhere can support anyone, but at least get the facts right.

In actuality, it appears that this mayoral race has more solid, qualified and just plain good candidates of any mayoral election, partly because there are seven of them.

They all seem to believe that public transportation, education, safety and affordable housing are priorities, and they each have various plans to implement improvement in those areas.

If Nashville real estate is going to continue to flourish, all of these issues must be addressed and addressed quickly with immediate progress.

If our children are not educated, our roads are frozen, there is no housing for the workforce and the streets are not safe, we are sunk.

Nashville loses a bit of its “It”

For all of the wonderment occurring in Nashville over the past few years, the city loses from time to time a key element of what makes it great. Mike Pigott was a key figure in Nashville’s growth and storied history.

As a founding member of McNeely, Pigott and Fox Public Relations, he and his partners developed one of the city’s most successful public relations firms, providing support and advice for hundreds of political candidates and elected officials who led the city into its current state.

His work with Safe Haven, a non-profit organization that helps provide housing to homeless families, was legendary.

In the 1970s, Mike was a reporter for the Nashville Banner, where he garnered numerous awards for his reporting. His quick, dry, subtle wit endeared him to his colleagues.

When Nashville was a small tall town, Mike was a big figure.

His reporting, public relations work and dedication to those less fortunate helped mold the city.

Sale of the Week

After a drive down I-65 to the Harding Place exit, and a trip to Trousdale and a cut through to Oakley, there is Aberdeen Woods, one of the most popular neighborhoods in the area.

It has proven to be profitable place for homeowners to park their cars and their money.

The home at 1105 Rannoch Place sold last week for $377,500 after Tiffany Fykes with Keller Williams listed it for $375,000.

The irrepressible Lise Deschenes of Fridrich and Clark Realty represented the buyer.

Fykes has flourished in 37220 zip code, and Deschenes seems to know no boundaries with sales all over town. She has a stronghold on the Traceside community by Loveless Café on Highway 100.

Luckily Aberdeen Woods has a Cracker Barrel nearby, not quite the same, but great breakfast nonetheless.

This four bedroom, two and a-half bath home, built in 2003, sold that year for $229,900, and then for $260,000 the next year.

That owner then sold it in 2008, when the economy was bleak, for $308,000. It sold for $377,500 last week, capping a nice run for a period that included the Great Recession.

The home has 2,520 square feet, a fireplace, a two-car garage and a kitchen that Fykes describes as “updated and flawless” to go along with the fenced backyard.
