US stocks notch modest gains on solid earnings reports

U.S. stocks are closing with modest gains after several companies reported solid earnings.

Toymaker Hasbro and the oil and gas company Halliburton rose after reporting results Monday that were better than analysts were expecting.

PayPal surged 5 percent on its first day of trading as a standalone company after its separation from eBay.

Mining companies fell as the price of gold slumped to a five-year low.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 13 points, or 0.1 percent, to 18,100.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose a point to 2,128. The Nasdaq composite rose eight points, or 0.2 percent, to 5,218.

European markets rose after Greece's banks reopened for the first time in three weeks.

Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.37 percent.
