Nashville company fined for misleading public about charity donations

NASHVILLE (AP) — A Nashville company faces a $247,500 fine for misleading the public about donations to a local charity.

According to the secretary of state's Division of Charitable Solicitations, the investigation began after a complaint last year from a person who donated items to The Arc of Davidson County and later found those same items at a thrift store.

Investigators found J&I Advisory Support has a longstanding agreement with The Arc to collect donations and deliver them to local Southern Thrift stores, which are owned by J&I's parent company. The Arc gets a commission on the donated items.

Investigators found J&I did not properly disclose that they are a paid solicitor working for The Arc.

The Arc is not accused of any wrongdoing.
