Senate candidate Carr gives loan to prominent supporter

Print | Front Page | Email this story

NASHVILLE (AP) - The campaign of Republican U.S. Senate candidate Joe Carr has loaned $200,000 to the company of a prominent supporter in an unusual arrangement that has drawn the attention of the Federal Election Commission.

The Tennessean (http://tnne.ws/1l5cUF2) reports the Carr campaign last year issued the money to Life Watch Pharmacy, a Nashville company led by conservative financier Andrew Miller. The campaign reported more than $9,500 in income from the loan after it was paid back this spring.

The FEC in early June contacted the Carr campaign to ask for an explanation about the transaction, noting that it could violate campaign finance laws if it was a contribution. Miller had already given the maximum $5,200 to Carr.

Carr filed a corrected report last week to stress that the money was not a donation.
