Brock is president, CEO of Launch Tennessee

Launch Tennessee, a public-private partnership focused on supporting the creation and development of high-growth companies in Tennessee, has named Charlie Brock as the organization’s new president and chief executive officer and Stuart McWhorter as the organization’s new vice chair.

“Charlie’s experience as both an entrepreneur and investor will be critical in advancing our state’s rapidly growing entrepreneurial ecosystem, over time helping create jobs and economic prosperity for Tennesseans,” says Bill Hagerty, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development and chairman of the LaunchTN Board of Directors.

In 1998, Brock helped establish Foxmark Media and grew it into one of the nation’s largest mall advertising companies. As the CEO and largest shareholder, he structured two rounds of private financing before selling the company in 2006 to Australia-based EYE Corp., one of the world’s leading out-of-home media companies. After selling Foxmark, Brock helped launch FourBridges Capital Advisors, a lower-middle market investment bank based in Chattanooga where Brock served as managing director.

Brock most recently served as a general partner of the Chattanooga Renaissance Fund, a Chattanooga-based angel investment group, and as the CEO of CO.LAB, a Chattanooga accelerator that provides advice and mentoring services to entrepreneurs and runs the summer Gig Tank program. Brock is an organizer and director of CapitalMark Bank and Trust in Chattanooga and also serves as a director of The Dixie Group and Park Media Software. McWhorter is co-founder and president of Clayton Associates, a venture capital firm based in Brentwood. McWhorter is also chairman of the board of both Medical Reimbursements of America and Censis Technologies as well as a board member of FCA Venture Partners, Haven Behavioral Healthcare, 24/7 Sports, and FirstBank of Tennessee.

Sherrard named head of Bar Association

Thomas J. Sherrard, a founding member of Sherrard & Roe, PLC, is the new president of the Nashville Bar Association and will serve a one-year term.

A member of the Nashville and American Bar Associations, Sherrard has served on the ABA’s Committee on Federal Securities Law and the Committee on Commercial Law. He has been a member of the Tennessee Corporate Law Revision Commission, and has been a frequent presenter at programs for the Practicing Law Institute. He served for several years as an adjunct professor of law at Vanderbilt University Law School and Owen Graduate School of Management.

Sherrard also is the founding chairman of Partnership 2020, the economic development initiative sponsored by the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, and has served as chairman of the Nashville Chamber of Commerce. He is a trustee and past president of Leadership Nashville, chairman of the Steering Committee for Nashville’s Agenda, and a co-founder, along with Nelson Andrews, and first chairman of the Nashville Public Education Foundation. He also currently serves on the boards of the Canby Robinson Society and the YMCA Foundation.

Gill assumes new role at Belmont

Longtime Belmont University employee Paula Gill has been promoted to vice president for institutional effectiveness.

In this role, Gill is responsible for evaluating the university’s progress toward its performance objectives and for seeking ways to improve services and processes that provide value for students. In addition, she will serve as a member of the president’s senior leadership cabinet, providing feedback and consultation on University decisions and strategic planning.

After leading the team responsible for Belmont’s reaffirmation for accreditation efforts through SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools), Gill also was charged to lead recent reorganizations of the university’s marketing and communications branches, as well as the event services and provost’s offices.

Her current duties include collaborating with the Office of Advancement to develop effective and efficient operations while also leading a special campus-wide initiative centered on innovation.

Prior to her appointment as vice president, Gill served in numerous positions throughout her 19-year Belmont career, beginning as mail services coordinator in the University mailroom in 1994. After receiving her B.S. at Belmont, her career transitioned into areas related to quality enhancement and student support, including past positions as director of student financial services and associate dean of enrollment services.

Gill received Master of Science and Doctor of Education degrees from the University of Alabama with a focus on quality management and higher education administration.

Goldstein joins Barge, Waggoner

Mark Goldstein, PE, has joined Barge, Waggoner, Sumner and Cannon Inc. (BWSC) as manager for controls/automation design in the Industrial and Buildings Services business unit. Goldstein will work directly with designers, engineers, and programmers to lead the firm’s efforts in automation and control design.

Goldstein brings more than 30 years of experience in instrumentation control services to Barge Waggoner in the chemical, food and beverage, metals, manufacturing and environmental control industries. He was recently employed at Mesa Associates as principal electrical, instrumentation and controls engineer. Prior to joining Barge Waggoner, Goldstein was senior instrumentation and controls engineer at Gresham, Smith and Partners in Nashville.

A graduate from the University of Missouri of Science and Technology with a degree in Chemical Engineering, Goldstein is a professional engineer in Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky, Missouri and South Carolina.

Saint Thomas adds endocrinologist

Dr. Emily P. Neely, board certified endocrinologist, has joined Saint Thomas Hospital’s medical staff. Neely will be seeing patients with Endocrinology Diabetes Associates at Saint Thomas Hospital.

Neely earned her medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in Jackson, Miss. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and a fellowship in endocrinology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Ingram Barge promotes Barker to VP, CIO

Robert Barker has been promoted by Ingram Barge Company to senior vice president and chief information officer.

Prior to Ingram, Barker served as director of information systems for a multi-billion dollar division of Manitowoc Companies in Shady Grove, Penn. He is an alumnus of Purdue University with a degree in computer integrated manufacturing.

Harbison appointed to Board of Law Examiners

William Harbison, member at Sherrard & Roe, PLC, has been appointed to the Tennessee Board of Law Examiners by the Supreme Court of Tennessee. The Tennessee Board of Law Examiners governs the examination and admission of attorneys to practice in Tennessee.

He will serve a three-year term, joining attorneys from Nashville, Chattanooga, Kingsport and Memphis.

Harbison is a fellow and member of the American, Tennessee, and Nashville Bar Associations, and a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. He is past president of the Nashville Bar Association, a member and past president of the Nashville Estate Planning Council and serves as a hearing panel member on the Tennessee Board of Professional Responsibility.

LMA names Nashvillians to leadership posts

Two employees of Bass, Berry & Sims PLC have been appointed to serve in leadership positions of the international and local city group of the Legal Marketing Association.

Kimberly D. Bell will serve as treasurer of the LMA board. Eleanor A. Smith will serve as Nashville City Group chair of the LMA Southeastern Chapter.

Bell is managing director of the Litigation Practice at Bass, Berry & Sims. She has more than 17 years of law firm marketing, business development and communications experience.

Smith is the managing director of the Healthcare Practice at Bass, Berry & Sims. Smith has worked at the firm for more than seven years and was promoted to her current position in 2010.

Neurologist joins Tristar Centennial

Dr. Maria Dongas, a board-certified neurologist, has joined the medical staff of TriStar Centennial Medical Center. Dongas will primarily provide outpatient neurology services.

Dongas earned her medical degree from St. Louis University, College of Medicine, in Baguio City, Philippines. She completed a residency in neurology at University Hospital in Newark, N.J., and completed a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology and sleep medicine at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.

Dongas most recently served with Dickson Medical Associates in Dickson. She will work with The Sleep Disorders Center at TriStar Centennial Medical Center.

Avondale Partners has new managing director

Waymon Tipton has joined Avondale Partners as managing director to lead the firm’s wealth management group.

Tipton was formerly a vice president in the Nashville office of Stephens Inc. He will be charged with driving growth of the firm’s wealth management business, both in terms of new advisor recruitment and assets under management, and will serve as a member of the firm’s operating committee.

Tipton brings more than 30 years experience in financial and corporate management. He began his career as a bond trader at First American and moved to wealth management in 1990 when he joined Robinson Humphrey. He has served as an investment adviser to individuals and institutions and has held numerous leadership positions in the private sector.
