Bill to close economic development records stalls

Print | Front Page | Email this story

NASHVILLE (AP) — A bill to close access to public records in local governments' economic development deals has stalled in the Tennessee House.

Democratic Rep. Larry Miller of Memphis on Wednesday indefinitely delayed a vote on his bill before a floor vote could take place.

Economic development deals have become the source of heightened interest this session as lawmakers have reviewed incentive deals struck with appliance maker Electrolux and online retailer Amazon.com toward the end of former Gov. Phil Bredesen's administration last year.

The bill's stated aim is to protect companies' trade secrets or marketing and capital plans.

The companion bill has yet to advance out of committee in the Senate.
