1. Retailers brace for flood of returns from online shopping -

NEW YORK (AP) — A huge surge in online shopping during the pandemic has been a savior for retailers, but it comes at a price.

Shoppers are expected to return twice as many items as they did during last year's holiday period, costing companies roughly $1.1 billion, according to Narvar Inc., a software and technology company that manages online returns for hundreds of brands.

2. Sizing up: As pandemic surges, so do waistlines -

NEW YORK (AP) — When Allison Weiss Brady and Michael Ladin emerged from weeks of locking down during the pandemic, they needed new clothes in new sizes — for different reasons.

Brady, 49, a charity fundraiser from a Philadelphia suburb, had been pulling back on her candy buying sprees during the lockdown and stepped up the cardio workouts at her home gym out of boredom. She lost 20 pounds and went down two sizes. In contrast, Ladin, 58, of Oak Park, Illinois, gained 10 pounds this past spring after sitting around eating chips and dip.

3. There's room for small businesses to compete with Prime Day -

NEW YORK (AP) — As Amazon gears up for its Prime Day promotion, other big-name retailers like Macy's and eBay are launching deals and sales of their own. But small businesses — including those that don't sell much online — shouldn't sit on the sidelines.
