1. California eyes penalties for oil companies' big profits -

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California could become the first state to fine big oil companies for making too much money, a reaction to the industry's supersized profits following a summer of record-high gas prices in the nation's most populous state.

2. Gas prices focus of special California legislative session -

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — At Gov. Gavin Newsom's prompting, California lawmakers kicked off a special legislative session on Monday to consider punishing big oil companies for their supersized profits during a time of record-high gas prices — the start of a likely lengthy process that will test the liberal Legislature's resolve in the face of fierce industry opposition.

3. Eagles WR Brown at peace with career following Titans trade -

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A.J. Brown just wanted to get paid.

With good reason, Brown figured. Tennessee drafted Brown in the second round of the 2019 draft and he instantly became one of the top receivers in the game. He topped 1,000 yards receiving each of his first two seasons and had 869 in just 13 games in his third.

4. Twende accelerator opens ’23 applications -

5. China to increase nuclear warheads to 1,500, Pentagon warns -

WASHINGTON (AP) — China is expanding its nuclear force and is on pace to nearly quadruple the number of warheads it has by 2035, rapidly closing its gap with the United States, the Pentagon said in a report released Tuesday.

6. Biden tells GOP his hopes, gets stiff response from McCarthy -

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden said Tuesday he hopes both parties' lawmakers can work together to keep the government open, boost spending for Ukraine and avert a crippling rail strike. But the Republicans' pick to be the next House speaker shrugged off the sunny talk, serving notice that things are "going to be different" once the GOP takes control of the chamber.

7. Biden at 80: A 'respecter of fate' mulls 2nd White House bid -

WASHINGTON (AP) — People in their 80s lead countries, create majestic art and perform feats of endurance. One entered the record books for scaling Mount Everest. It's soon time for Joe Biden, 80 on Sunday, to decide whether he has one more mountain to climb — the one to a second term as president.

8. GOP's lackluster fundraising spurs post-election infighting -

WASHINGTON (AP) — Trailing badly in his Arizona Senate race as votes poured in, Republican Blake Masters went on Tucker Carlson's Fox News program and assigned blame to one person: Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

9. Stocks end higher on Wall Street but still fall for the week -

Stocks ended higher on Wall Street but still wound up with weekly losses after several days of bumpy trading.

Some retailers posted big gains after reporting surprisingly strong quarterly results and giving investors encouraging forecasts. Gap, Ross Stores and Foot Locker all rose sharply.

10. Analysis: Have China and India shifted stance on Russia war? -

NUSA DUA, Indonesia (AP) — China and India, after months of refusing to condemn Russia's war in Ukraine, did not stand in the way of the release this week of a statement by the world's leading economies that strongly criticizes Moscow.

11. Macy's heads into holidays strongly, boosts 2022 guidance -

NEW YORK (AP) — Macy's profits and sales slid in the third quarter as the department store had to step up discounts amid a pullback from shoppers stung by inflation.

Yet it topped Wall Street expectations and the New York company raised its earnings outlook, in part due to better credit card revenue. Shares rose nearly 7% before the opening bell Thursday.

12. 'Democracy voters' delivered for Democrats in tightest races -

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden tried to shape the midterm elections not as a verdict on his time in office, but rather on the contrast between Democrats and Republicans on American democracy.

13. Rising travel, food costs straining college athletic budgets -

College athletic programs are reacting to soaring inflation the same way as everyone else — they're looking for ways big and small to save money.

In the Power Five, home of college sports' biggest budgets and most considerable resources, schools are working with boosters and other partners to try to bridge the financial gap. Working down the line to smaller institutions, where budgets and resources are smaller, creativity is a must.

14. Tennessee Republican Gov. Bill Lee wins reelection bid -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has won his reelection contest, keeping Republican control of a top statewide office that hasn't been in Democratic hands for more than a decade.

Lee defeated Democrat Jason Martin on Tuesday to clinch another four-year term in office. The election comes amid a first term that has seen a global pandemic, inflation, uprisings over racial injustice across the country, mass shootings nationwide and the Supreme Court's end to the constitutional right to abortion.

15. On Wall Street, extreme punishments for weak profit reports -

NEW YORK (AP) — When it comes to meeting Wall Street's expectations for profit and sales, it's put-up-or-get-beat-up time for CEOs.

88. $1,730 per month for 1-bedroom apartment -

The online listing for a two-bedroom, two-bath condo in Green Hills went up on a Thursday, complete with plenty of color photos, even though it won’t be available until September.

Two days later, Tamara Graham was sorting through more than 50 responses, including some from out-of-towners willing to rent sight unseen.

89. UN climate chief: Don't give in to despair on global warming -

BERLIN (AP) — Nations must keep up hope and focus on tackling global warming despite the many obstacles now to international cooperation — including the war in Ukraine, the coronavirus pandemic, food shortages and rising energy costs, the U.N. climate chief urged Monday.

90. An infamous day. A search for answers. Will America tune in? -

WASHINGTON (AP) — Americans are processing the nightmare of the slaughter of children in Texas, the racist murders in Buffalo, New York, and the other numbingly repeated scenes of carnage in the United States.

91. Inflation divide: The wealthy splurge, the poorest pull back -

NEW YORK (AP) — Americans at the low end of the income rung are once again struggling to make ends meet.

A confluence of factors — the expiration of federal stimulus checks and surging inflation on staples like gas and food — are driving an even bigger wedge between the haves and have-nots.

92. Red-hot summer job market awaits US teens as employers sweat -

WASHINGTON (AP) — Mary Jane Riva, CEO of the Pizza Factory, has a cautionary message for her customers this summer: Prepare to wait longer for your Hawaiian pie or calzone.

The Pizza Factory's 100 West Coast locations are desperately short of workers. With about 12 employees per store, they're barely half-staffed — just when many more Americans are venturing out to restaurant chains like hers.

93. Worry about stagflation, a flashback to '70s, begins to grow -

WASHINGTON (AP) — Stagflation. It was the dreaded "S word" of the 1970s.

For Americans of a certain age, it conjures memories of painfully long lines at gas stations, shuttered factories and President Gerald Ford's much-ridiculed "Whip Inflation Now" buttons.

94. US economy shrank by 1.5% in Q1 but consumers kept spending -

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. economy shrank in the first three months of the year even though consumers and businesses kept spending at a solid pace, the government reported Thursday in a slight downgrade of its previous estimate for the January-March quarter.

95. Elon Musk revises Twitter financing plan; shares jump -

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Wednesday revised the financing plan for his proposed $44 billion purchase of Twitter, raising investor hopes that the unpredictable billionaire still intends to pull off a deal roiled by market turbulence and Musk's not-entirely-explicable concerns about the number of fake accounts on Twitter.

96. Female CEO's pay rose 26% in 2021, but ranks remain small -

NEW YORK (AP) — Pay packages for the women who run S&P 500 companies jumped in 2021 as the economy recovered and stock prices and profits soared.

Median pay for the women occupying the corner office rose to nearly $16 million, according to the annual survey done by Equilar for The Associated Press. Still, experts say there's much more to be done to improve gender diversity in the corporate ranks and close the pay gap between men and women.

97. How debt-related stress affects body and mind -

Being in debt feels like you’re always a step behind. It doesn’t help that debt is spoken about as something that’s your fault – too much online shopping, or too many pricy pitchers of mimosas at brunch.

98. G7 countries to provide $19.8 billion in aid to Ukraine -

KOENIGSWINTER, Germany (AP) — The Group of Seven leading economies agreed Friday to provide $19.8 billion in economic aid to Ukraine to help keep tight finances from hindering its ability to defend itself from Russia's invasion.

99. House passes domestic terrorism bill after Buffalo shooting -

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House passed legislation late Wednesday night that would bolster federal resources to prevent domestic terrorism in response to the racist mass shooting in Buffalo, New York.

The 222-203, nearly party-line vote was an answer to the growing pressure Congress faces to address gun violence and white supremacist attacks — a crisis that escalated following two mass shootings over the weekend. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., a member of the congressional committee investigating the attack on the U.S. Capitol, was the lone Republican to vote in favor of the measure.

100. High inflation leaves food banks struggling to meet needs -

Kendall Nunamaker and her family of five in Kennewick, Washington, faced impossible math this month: How to pay for gas, groceries and the mortgage with inflation driving up prices?

Like many other working families, the Nunamakers are grappling with the 8.3% inflation in the consumer price index in April announced Wednesday — slowing slightly from the March figure which was the largest year-over-year increase since 1981, according to the Labor Department. The national average gas price reached a record high Wednesday of $4.40 a gallon. And global food prices are climbing after shortages caused by Russia's war against Ukraine and other supply chain problems.
