1. Worry about stagflation, a flashback to '70s, begins to grow -

WASHINGTON (AP) — Stagflation. It was the dreaded "S word" of the 1970s.

For Americans of a certain age, it conjures memories of painfully long lines at gas stations, shuttered factories and President Gerald Ford's much-ridiculed "Whip Inflation Now" buttons.

2. 40 years after the Knoxville World’s Fair -

In 1982, the “scruffy little city” did it. Despite some near-death experiences, what is billed by some as the last successful world’s fair to date was held in Knoxville from May to October that year.

3. Lawsuit accuses 3 automakers and parts maker in air bag case -

DETROIT (AP) — A class action lawsuit is accusing three automakers and a parts manufacturer of knowingly selling vehicles containing air bag inflators that are at risk of exploding. Two deaths and at least four injuries have been linked to such explosions.

4. Ford pays $19M to settle claims on fuel economy, payload -

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Ford Motor Company on Tuesday settled claims by 40 U.S. state attorneys general that the company made misleading claims about the fuel economy and payload capacity of some of its vehicles, violating state consumer protection laws.

5. Fed nominee Michael Barr calls inflation 'far too high' -

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden's pick to be the Federal Reserve's top banking regulator pledged Thursday to help reduce high inflation and provide "clear rules" to govern financial innovation.

6. TVA weighs coal plant switch options, climate impact -

NASHVILLE (AP) — The nation's largest public utility plans to shut down a massive coal-fired power plant, but wants to replace it with natural gas. That would put the federal Tennessee Valley Authority out of step with President Joe Biden's administration goal of a carbon-pollution-free energy sector by 2035.

7. US inflation dips from 4-decade high but still causing pain -

WASHINGTON (AP) — Inflation eased slightly in April after months of relentless increases but remains near a four-decade high, imposing a continuing financial strain on American households.

Consumer prices jumped 8.3% last month from a year ago, the government said Wednesday. That was below the 8.5% year-over-year surge in March, which was the highest since 1981. On a monthly basis, prices rose 0.3% from March to April, the smallest rise in eight months.

8. Settlement for Black-majority town in Tennessee takeover case -

NASHVILLE (AP) — After alleging that Tennessee's top leaders were placing unfair scrutiny over a predominantly Black town's finances, the small town of Mason announced Wednesday it had reached a deal halting the threat of a state takeover of its finances.

9. Weatherly & Dixon merges with Lewis Thomason -

The law firm of Weatherly & Dixon PLLC and its partners, James L. Weatherly and Jacqueline B. Dixon, have merged their practices with Lewis Thomason, P.C., says Lisa Ramsay Cole, president and managing shareholder for the statewide firm.

10. Days of whisper: NASCAR, Indy join EV push -

When – not if – NASCAR and the NTT IndyCar Series enter the electric era of motorsports racing, will the traditional race command be replaced by “start your motors”?

Better yet, try to imagine NASCAR Hall of Famer Darrell Waltrip shouting, “boogity, boogity, boogity … let’s go green, boys,” to start a Cup race.

11. No turning back as automakers go electric -

Here’s a good analogy about the nation’s ever-changing automotive conversion from cars with internal combustion engines to a fleet of battery-powered electric vehicles.

“A lot of people sound worried, but I like to compare it to leaving the horse and going to the internal combustion engine. So, now the motor is the horse, and we’re leaving it behind,” says Ferman Clark of Brentwood, a now-retired GM employee who worked at the Saturn plant in Spring Hill from 1990 through the mid-2000s.

12. Automakers drive south, powered by electricity -

It began with Nissan’s decision to bring a manufacturing plant to Tennessee in 1983.

Four decades later, Tennessee serves as the home of three major auto manufacturers – Nissan, GM and Volkswagen – with Ford on the way, and is the North American headquarters for Japan-based automotive giants Nissan, Mitsubishi and Bridgestone, all located in the Nashville area.

13. Ford recalls Explorer SUVs that can roll away while in park -

DETROIT (AP) — Ford Motor Co. is recalling more than a quarter-million Explorer SUVs in the U.S. because they can roll away unexpectedly while shifted into park.

14. Amazon reports rare quarterly loss as online shopping slows -

NEW YORK (AP) — Amazon reported its first quarterly loss since 2015 on Thursday, its money-making juggernaut stalled by a slowdown in pandemic-induced online shopping and a huge write-down of its investment in an electric-vehicle startup.

15. US economy shrinks, threats loom, but growth likely to last -

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. economy shrank in the first three months of the year, and faces threats from high inflation and rising interest rates, yet economists foresee a return to growth for the rest of 2022 based on the strength of the job market and consumer spending.

16. Ford loses $3.1 billion, hit by investment and chip shortage -

DALLAS (AP) — Ford Motor Co. reported Wednesday that it lost $3.1 billion in the first quarter, weighed down by its investment in an electric-vehicle startup, and its revenue slid as a shortage of chips limited the supply of pickups and SUVs in North America.
