5. Justice Dept. to appeal order voiding travel mask mandate -

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department is filing an appeal seeking to overturn a judge's order that voided the federal mask mandate on planes and trains and in travel hubs, officials said.

The notice came minutes after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention asked the Justice Department to appeal the decision handed down by a federal judge in Florida earlier this week.

6. Vols' Kennedy Chandler declares for NBA draft, hires agent -

KNOXVILLE (AP) — Tennessee point guard Kennedy Chandler has declared for the NBA draft and is signing with an agent after his freshman season with the Volunteers.

KNOXVILLE (AP) — Tennessee has rewarded coach Rick Barnes for winning the Volunteers' first Southeastern Conference Tournament championship in 43 years with a contract extension through the 2026-27 season.

By several measures, the Tennessee men’s basketball team’s season was a success. The Vols captured their first SEC Tournament title in 43 years. They beat Kentucky, Arizona, Arkansas, Auburn and North Carolina. They finished undefeated at Thompson-Boling Arena and were ranked No. 5 in The Associated Press poll.

DALLAS (AP) — Airline and tourism groups are pushing to eliminate the government requirement that international travelers provide a negative test for COVID-19 before boarding a U.S.-bound plane.

They believe the testing rule is discouraging people from booking international trips. They point to the United Kingdom, which eliminated a similar rule last month.

NEW YORK (AP) — Through the first year of the pandemic, the country's independent booksellers have — so far — avoided disaster.

On Thursday, the American Booksellers Association told The Associated Press that membership increased from 1,635 to 1,701 since May 2020, the additions a combination of brand-new stores and existing stores that had not been part of the independents' trade group. While association CEO Allison K. Hill and others had feared that hundreds of stores could go out of business during the 2020-21 holiday season, the ABA has tallied only 14 closings in 2021 so far, along with more than 70 last year.
