17. Graduate transfers bring winning experience to Vols' rebuild -

KNOXVILLE (AP) — Tennessee has added players from some of the nation's most successful programs in an attempt to jump-start the Volunteers' return to Southeastern Conference contention.

The Vols' roster includes graduate transfers from Alabama (offensive lineman Brandon Kennedy ), Michigan State (running back Madre London ) and Stanford (quarterback Keller Chryst ). Those three teams posted a combined 32-9 record last season, while Tennessee went 4-8 and set a school record for losses .

NASHVILLE (AP) — After the season the Mississippi State Bulldogs have had, what's a little two-hour weather delay, a five-hour-plus, 11-inning game to punch a ticket to the College World Series?

The Bulldogs survived all those things, plus a three-run ninth-inning rally by Vanderbilt, to take a 10-6 victory on Sunday night and secure a date in Omaha in what has become a season of survival.

Bass, Berry & Sims attorney Jeff Gibson has been named the Tennessee Justice Center’s 2017 Pro Bono Attorney of the Year.

Last year, Gibson and a colleague at Bass provided pro bono representation to a TJC client who had been denied TennCare coverage for nursing home care. The team won the hearing for the client, and the nursing home reimbursed the client’s wife thousands of dollars.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — At least one influential donor has informed congressional Republicans that the "Dallas piggy bank" is closed until he sees major action on health care and taxes.

Texas-based donor Doug Deason has already refused to host a fundraiser for two members of Congress and informed House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., his checkbook is closed as well.

33. Wide Receiver U? That’s so 20 years ago -

At the 2015 SEC Media Days, Tennessee coach Butch Jones referred to his school as “the original Wide Receiver U.”

The reference goes back to the days when the Vols were loaded with fast, talented pass receivers on the perimeter. In a heady stretch from 1982-91, UT had six wide receivers selected in the first round of the NFL draft – Anthony Hancock, Willie Gault, Clyde Duncan, Tim McGee, Anthony Miller and Alvin Harper.

Will Pedigo, Nashville Public Television producer, has been selected as a 2017 moderator for INPUT, an international public media conference that presents films and television programs.

47. Vanderbilt gives Vols opening for late-season run -

If the Tennessee baseball team makes a run in the SEC tournament May 24-29, it may look back to last weekend’s series against No. 4-ranked Vanderbilt as a turning point in the season.

The Vols reveled in victory at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. After losing Friday’s opener 6-0, UT beat the Commodores 2-1 Saturday and claimed the series with a 5-3 win Sunday.

Middle Tennessee-based wealth manager Tim Pagliara, chairman and CEO of CapWealth Advisors, has been named the top financial advisor in the state of Tennessee by Barron’s magazine for the fourth consecutive year. 67. Lottery rebound lifts record 105K scholars -

More high school students graduating in May will go to college with a Tennessee Lottery scholarship, making it the largest class in the Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship’s history.

Officials with the lottery are projecting they will award 105,000 scholarships, a total of $315 million from the lottery pot to 11 programs, including the most widely recognized HOPE grant.
