HCA Healthcare's second-quarter profit jumped past analyst expectations as patients returned to operating tables and hospital rooms after staying away last year at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nashville’s HCA Healthcare has been recognized on the 2021 LinkedIn Top Companies ranking, an annual guide that identifies the best places for professionals to grow their careers and develop skills.

4. Educational Media moving to Nashville -

Educational Media Foundation, parent company to K-LOVE and Air1 radio networks, AccessMore podcasts and WTA Media, plans to move its global headquarters in Nashville.

EMF has been growing its Tennessee presence over the last several years. It recently expanded its studio, from which the K-LOVE morning show and Air1 programs now broadcast, and its promotions, AccessMore podcasting, live events and WTA Media teams have offices in the area already. Members of EMF’s content division will begin moving into the existing offices and temporary space this summer.

5. 4 Nashville ‘bottlenecks’ make US Top 100 list -

Six Tennessee bottlenecks for trucks – including four in Nashville – have made the top 100 of most congested traffic locations, the American Transportation Research Institute reports.

“Tennessee is at the crossroads of the country, and increasingly that intersection is being choked by congestion,” says Tennessee Trucking Association President Dave Huneryager. “Despite the pandemic, trucks continued moving and delivering their critical loads, but their jobs were made more difficult by these chokepoints.

6. Belmont, HCA to launch medical school -

Belmont University and HCA Healthcare are partnering to start a new medical school in Nashville.

“HCA Healthcare will bring world-class expertise to Belmont’s College of Medicine, offering our students extraordinary faculty instructors and a pathway to residency and clinical placements,” says Belmont President Bob Fisher. “A College of Medicine is the natural next step in Belmont’s health care offerings.”

7. Belmont University to open new medical school -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Officials with Belmont University announced Thursday that they intend to start a new medical school in Nashville.

According to a news release, the university is launching the College of Medicine by partnering with HCA Healthcare, the nation's largest hospital chain. HCA Healthcare regularly partners with Belmont.

8. HCA joins ventilator distribution effort -

Nashville-based HCA Healthcare will provide as many as 1,000 ventilators as part of the American Hospital Association’s collaboration with the federal government and health systems to distribute the equipment to hospitals experiencing a surge of patients with COVID-19.

9. XOi adds $11M in Series C financing -

XOi Technologies, a Nashville-field service communication solutions company, has announced the completion of its Series C financing round.

The $11-million round was led by PeakSpan Capital with participation by Grotech Ventures, as well as Series B investors, Vocap Investment Partners and Nashville Capital Network.

10. HCA pays $1.5B for North Carolina hospitals -

Nashville’s HCA Healthcare has acquired Mission Health, a six-hospital system in Asheville and western North Carolina, for approximately $1.5 billion.

“The team at Mission Health has been nationally recognized for providing high-quality patient care, and we’re excited that they’ve joined HCA Healthcare,” says Sam Hazen, CEO of HCA Healthcare. “We’re looking forward to investing in western North Carolina and helping ensure Mission Health’s 133-year tradition of caring for communities throughout the region continues for many years.”

11. HCA CEO Johnson to retire, company lays out succession plan -

HCA Healthcare CEO R. Milton Johnson will retire at the end of the year and be replaced by veteran executive Sam Hazen, the hospital chain's president and chief operating officer.

The company also said Monday that Johnson will leave its board next spring and be replaced as chairman by Thomas F. Frist III.

12. HCA appoints new chief operating officer -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Nashville-based HCA has a new chief operating officer, Sam Hazen, a 32-year veteran of HCA.

Hazen has served as president of operations for HCA since 2011, overseeing the operations of the company's 166 hospitals and 113 freestanding surgery centers, domestically and in the United Kingdom.
