6. Hammonds' big finish leads Georgia past Vanderbilt, 82-63 -

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — After missing each of his four shots in a scoreless first half, Rayshaun Hammonds found a positive attitude.

He also found his shot.

Hammonds scored 19 points, all in the second half, and Georgia bounced back from an ugly loss in its Southeastern Conference opener to beat Vanderbilt 82-63 on Wednesday night.

1. A sense of desperation. Both the Titans and Cowboys are coming off bye weeks and have mediocre 3-4 records entering Monday night’s game. The Titans, losers of three consecutive after a 3-1 start, are running the risk of sinking toward the bottom of the AFC South with another loss.

1. Defense, defense and more defense. The Titans defense, despite breakdowns against Buffalo, has still been a big reason for the team’s success thus far. Defense is also key to the Ravens’ success with old war horses like Terrell Suggs still leading the way. It wouldn’t be surprising to see this game end up a low-scoring affair like Titans-Ravens games of old.

NASHVILLE (AP) — Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota is starting this weekend against the Eagles, no matter how limited his injured right hand might be.

Mariota is Tennessee's best option with backup QB Blaine Gabbert in the concussion protocol. Austin Davis just joined the Titans and has been given a crash course in the Titans' offense but is still learning the playbook.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Marcus Mariota just has a knack for beating Jacksonville.

He's done it with his arm. He's done it with his legs. Now he's done it off the bench.

Mariota directed three scoring drives in relief of Blaine Gabbert, including one in the fourth quarter, and Tennessee knocked off the Jaguars 9-6 Sunday for their third straight victory in the series. Mariota improved to 5-2 against Jacksonville, his most wins against any opponent.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Around 10,000 spectators remained at the finish of the Miami Dolphins' marathon win over Tennessee, and they were hardly fair weather fans.

NASHVILLE (AP) — The Tennessee Titans are doing their best to recreate the Patriot Way in Music City.

General manager Jon Robinson, hired in January 2016, got his NFL start as a New England scout. Robinson signed cornerback Logan Ryan as a free agent last year. He then hired Mike Vrabel, who won three Super Bowls as a Patriots linebacker, as Tennessee's new coach in January after the Titans' season ended in Foxborough in the divisional round of the playoffs.

Marshawn Lynch vs. Titans defensive line. The Titans defensive front, led by Jurrell Casey, was stingy against the run last year, second best in the NFL. Oakland has a strong offensive line and now have former Seahawks star Lynch to run the ball a year after unretiring and joining the Raiders.

Oops. I goofed last year. So did lots of other people who thought Tennessee’s football team would win the SEC East Division and go to the league championship game for the first time since 2007. Kurt Winstead, a founding member of the Nashville law firm Rudy Winstead Turner, PLLC, has been promoted to brigadier general in the Tennessee National Guard.

Winstead began his career with the Tennessee National Guard in 1990 when he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Judge Advocate General Corp. His first assignment was as the judge advocate general for the 194th Engineer Brigade, now headquartered in Jackson. Throughout his more than 26 years of service, Winstead has served in numerous assignments culminating as the senior staff judge advocate at the Joint Force Headquarters in Nashville.
