4. Austin Peay names ex-Duke associate James to coach Governors -

CLARKSVILLE (AP) — Austin Peay has named former Duke associate coach Nate James to his first head coaching job with the Governors.

The school announced James' hiring on its web site Friday and will formally introduce him on Tuesday. James, 43, has spent much of the past two decades under Mike Krzyzewski as a player and staffer, helping the Blue Devils win NCAA championships in 2010 and '15 as an assistant before becoming associate head coach in 2017. He also logged 20 minutes in Duke's 2001 national championship game victory against Arizona.

The Commodores (0-3) became the first Southeastern Conference to fall below the 53 scholarship players required to play a game when on Oct. 12 their trip to Missouri was postponed. Luckily, Vanderbilt then had an open date allowing more time for players to heal up and clear protocols allowing them to return.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — In the battle for control of the U.S. Senate this year, the Deep South is fielding more Black candidates than it has since Reconstruction.

In South Carolina, Jaime Harrison is raising a previously unfathomable amount of money in what has become a competitive fight to unseat one of the more powerful Republicans in the Senate. He's joined by Raphael Warnock in neighboring Georgia, the leading Democrat in a crowded field running for the seat held by an appointed Republican. 33. Vandy rallies for 11-10 win over Ole Miss in SEC title game -

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) — The Vanderbilt Commodores mostly breezed into the Southeastern Conference Tournament championship game.

That one was anything but a breeze.

Philip Clarke's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth gave Vanderbilt an 11-10 comeback victory over Mississippi on Sunday and the team's first SEC Tournament title since 2007.

NASHVILLE (AP) — A bill that would strip local governments of the power to ban guns in public parks advanced in the Legislature on Tuesday despite concerns from the governor.

The measure, sponsored by Republican Rep. Mike Harrison of Rogersville, was approved 15-5 in the House Finance Committee and is now being scheduled for a vote on the House floor. The companion bill is awaiting a vote on the Senate floor.
