Oops. I goofed last year. So did lots of other people who thought Tennessee’s football team would win the SEC East Division and go to the league championship game for the first time since 2007. I predicted the Vols would go 10-2 in the regular season, 6-2 in the SEC, tie Georgia for the East Division title, go to the SEC Championship Game, lose to Alabama for a second time and go to the Orange Bowl.

53. US housing starts drop for 3rd straight month -

WASHINGTON (AP) — Homebuilders slowed down the pace of construction for the third straight month in May, a possible sign that the shortage of houses for sale might worsen.

The Commerce Department said Friday that housing starts fell 5.5 percent in May to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.09 million units. This comes after a 2.7 percent monthly decline in April and a 7.7 percent drop in March. Home construction is still 3.2 percent higher year-to-date, but that increase has been too modest to address the dwindling supply of homes.

77. US home sales rebounded in March after February dip -

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. homebuyers crowded back into the market in March, kicking off a solid start to the spring buying season after sales had slumped in February.

The National Association of Realtors said Wednesday that sales of existing homes rose 5.1 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.33 million. The increase follows a steep 7.3 percent decline in February sales to 5.07 million. Gains were concentrated last month in the Northeast and Midwest, with slight improvements in the South and West.

Carole King famously sang, “[I]t’s too late, baby now, it’s too late,/ Though we really did try to make it.” Something in this song created a gluey intangible not-yet-named noun that affixed itself to my soul. When I hear the words “Somethin’ inside has died, and I can’t hide/ And I just can’t fake it,” I feel a shudder throughout my being.
