6. Baker Donelson named ABA pro bono leader -

Baker Donelson has been honored by the American Bar Association as a recipient of the ABA Free Legal Answers 2020 Pro Bono Leader Award in recognition of the outstanding contribution of service by the firm’s attorneys to the virtual legal advice clinic.

7. Abelow named president of Nashville Bar Association -

Mike Abelow, member at Sherrard Roe Voigt and Harbison, has been named 2021 president of the Nashville Bar Association.

Abelow litigates complex business disputes, with a focus on business disputes that involve either party threatening to or filing for bankruptcy. He was a litigator with the Federal Trade Commission before moving to Nashville in 2007.

8. District Attorneys General Conference names deputy director -

Former Davidson County prosecutor Zoe K. Sams has been named deputy director of the Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference. Most recently, she served as the director of legislation and Safe Baby Court statewide coordinator for the Tennessee Department of Children Services.

9. Yarbrough honored by Nashville Bar Association -

Edward M. Yarbrough, a member and attorney at Bone McAllester Norton, has been awarded the Nashville Bar Foundation’s David Rutherford Award for 2020.

The award is given to a fellow who exemplifies the memory and ideals of David Rutherford, which include professionalism, charitable contributions in the legal field and in the community, and the spirit of collegiality among bench and bar.

Bass, Berry & Sims has formed a higher-education practice group with the addition of former Vanderbilt University General Counsel Audrey Anderson.

24. Blackburn unanimously elected presiding judge -

Davidson County General Sessions judges have unanimously elected Judge Melissa Blackburn to serve as presiding judge through Sept. 2019.

Blackburn has been serving as presiding judge since Dec. 2017 when Judge Angelita Blackshear Dalton was elevated to the 20th District Criminal Court by Gov. Bill Haslam. She was elected to serve as judge of the Division II General Sessions Court in 2014.

26. Lawyer, public servant Lewis Randolph Donelson dies at 100 -

MEMPHIS (AP) — Lewis Randolph Donelson III, who helped shape the modern Republican Party in Tennessee and co-founded Memphis law firm Baker Donelson, died Thursday, according a statement from the firm. He was 100 years old.

27. Butler Snow’s Polly elected president of Nashville Bar -

Erin Palmer Polly, a commercial litigation attorney at Butler Snow, LLP, will serve as the 2018 president of the Nashville Bar Association. In 2014, she was president of the NBA Young Lawyers Division, became a fellow of the Nashville Bar Foundation and received the Legal Aid Society Volunteer Lawyer’s Program Pro Bono Award.

35. Crider named chair of Baker Donelson group -

The law firm of Baker Donelson has named Christy Tosh Crider chair of its Health Care Litigation Group.

Crider is a shareholder located in Baker Donelson’s Nashville office where she will continue to serve as chair of the Firm’s Long Term Care Group, as well as the Firm’s Women’s Initiative. Meharry Medical College has appointed Veronica Thierry Mallett M.D., MMM, as its senior vice president for health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine, effective March 2017.

Mallett is a researcher and educator, known for her work in women’s health and reducing health disparities.

39. Lanquist named general counsel for Bar Association -

Edward D. Lanquist, Jr., managing shareholder at Patterson Intellectual Property Law, P.C., has been appointed general counsel of the Tennessee Bar Association.

The general counsel is chosen by the president of the TBA and serves a volunteer, one-year term. As general counsel, Lanquist will provide counsel to the board and board members and be actively involved in governance of the organization.

66. Governor opposes weakening open meetings law -

NASHVILLE (AP) - Gov. Bill Haslam said Thursday that he opposes efforts to water down Tennessee's open meetings law that says no more than two city or county officials can deliberate in private.

The Republican governor told reporters after a speech to the Donelson-Hermitage Chamber of Commerce that his previous experience as mayor of Knoxville gave him little reason to think an overhaul was necessary.
