When Congress sent states billions of dollars early in the coronavirus pandemic to help make schools safe, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee saw an opportunity.

He used part of the windfall to further his goal of offering school choice options for parents, sending millions to charter schools that operate without traditional public oversight. That included funneling more than $4 million to new charters that are not scheduled to open until at least next year.

18. Blue Cross Blue Shield now willing to cover Knoxville area -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee has reversed course and decided that it is willing to offer Obamacare insurance plans in the Knoxville area in 2018.

Kevin Walters, a spokesman for the state Department of Commerce and Insurance, said that if the plan is approved by the state, then all counties in Tennessee will have an insurance provider through the marketplace.

20. Troubled Rutherford County jail decertified by state board -

NASHVILLE (AP) — The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance says the troubled jail in Rutherford County has been decertified.

According to The Tennessean (http://tnne.ws/2gcdp8Z), department spokesman Kevin Walters says the department's Board of Control voted unanimously Wednesday to decertify the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center. It was one of four jails to be decertified.

21. Lawsuit: Salon shampoo license requirement doesn't wash -

NASHVILLE (AP) - When in the course of human events someone wants to give a shampoo at a salon, a conservative think tank says they shouldn't have to get a license.

Media report the Beacon Center of Tennessee filed a lawsuit Monday challenging the state's shampoo licensing requirement on behalf of Tammy Nutall-Pritchard, who wants to shampoo hair at a salon in Memphis. It's filed in Davidson County's Chancery Court in Nashville.
