8. Billionaires John, Laura Arnold to give 5% of wealth yearly -

Billionaire philanthropists John and Laura Arnold have committed to donate 5% of their wealth annually as part of an effort to encourage increased, timelier donations to charities.

The Arnolds, who live in Houston, are the first billionaires to sign on to the advocacy organization Global Citizen's "Give While You Live" campaign, which calls on the world's billionaires to give at least 5% of their wealth every year to a cause. The Arnolds' pledge Monday came as part of an alliance between Global Citizen and the Arnold-led Initiative to Accelerate Charitable Giving — a coalition of donors, experts and nonprofits who want Congress to raise giving requirements.

NASHVILLE (AP) — Tennessee is removing one state court's review before executing inmates under legislation signed by Republican Gov. Bill Lee.

With Lee's approval Tuesday, Tennessee in July will begin skipping the state Court of Criminal Appeals and provide automatic state Supreme Court death penalty reviews.

NASHVILLE (AP) — Tennessee lawmakers are sending Gov. Bill Lee a proposal to remove one state court's review before executing inmates. The Republican appears poised to sign it.

The Senate voted 26-6 Thursday for Republican Sen. John Stevens' legislation to skip Tennessee's Court of Criminal Appeals and provide automatic state Supreme Court death penalty reviews. One Republican voted no.

CHATTANOOGA (AP) — Three more former executives of the largest U.S. fuel retailer have been sentenced to prison in a plot to cheat trucking companies out of millions of dollars.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports former Pilot Flying J executives Arnold Ralenkotter, Jay Stinnett and John Spiewak were sentenced Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Curtis Collier. They received reduced sentences for admitting guilt and working with prosecutors to convict former company president Mark Hazelwood of fraud, and two others, this year.

Nashville's Travellers Rest is one of four Tennessee sites added today to the National Register of Historic Places, the Tennessee Historical Commission announced.

“Tennessee’s unique heritage is exemplified by these recent National Register nominations. Bass, Berry & Sims attorney Jeff Gibson has been named the Tennessee Justice Center’s 2017 Pro Bono Attorney of the Year.

Last year, Gibson and a colleague at Bass provided pro bono representation to a TJC client who had been denied TennCare coverage for nursing home care. The team won the hearing for the client, and the nursing home reimbursed the client’s wife thousands of dollars.

NASHVILLE (AP) — A jailed Tennessee sheriff has been sentenced to about four years in prison for charges related to profiting from the sale of electronic cigarettes to inmates.

The Tennessean reports (http://on.dnj.com/2p1DE6y) that 41-year-old former Rutherford County Sheriff Robert Arnold received the sentence Thursday in Nashville federal court. His 50-month sentence includes the eight months he's already served.

75. Uncle of jailed ex-sheriff pleads guilty to related charges -

NASHVILLE (AP) — The uncle of a Tennessee sheriff in jail for profiting off the sale of e-cigarettes to inmates has also pleaded guilty in the case.

The Tennessean reports (http://tnne.ws/2kkEoA8) that John Vanderveer pleaded guilty to one count of witness tampering Monday in federal court in Nashville. The charge stems from an attempt to get a sales representative to destroy documents related to his nephew ex-Rutherford County Sheriff Robert Arnold and Joe Russell.

NASHVILLE (AP) - A jailed Tennessee sheriff accused of profiting from the sale of electronic cigarettes to inmates pleaded guilty Wednesday to three federal charges.

Media outlets reported that former Rutherford County Sheriff Robert Arnold, 40, entered guilty pleas to wire fraud, honest services fraud and extortion. The move came three weeks before his trial was to begin on a 14-count indictment.
