1. Investors press railroads to add sick time for workers -

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Major freight railroads are facing pressure to add sick days for their workers from a new front: An influential investment group says some of its members are now pushing the measure that Congress declined to as part of the contracts they imposed last week to avert a potentially devastating nationwide rail strike.

2. The matchup: No. 9 Tennessee at Vanderbilt -

Tennessee's chance at a berth in the College Football Playoff is most likely gone, but the Volunteers can still post the program's first 10-win regular season since 2003. The Vols have won three straight against in-state rival Vanderbilt. The Commodores needs a victory to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2018 in coach Clark Lea's second season. A win would be the Commodores' third straight, all against SEC teams. It's a big turnaround for Vanderbilt after snapping a 26-game skid against league competition earlier this month at Kentucky.

3. Pelosi to step aside from Dem leadership, remain in Congress -

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that she will not seek a leadership position in the new Congress, making way for a new generation to steer the party after Democrats lost control of the House to Republicans in the midterm elections.

4. Across the US, a return to democratic order. Will it last? -

WASHINGTON (AP) — There was no violence. Many candidates who denied the legitimacy of previous elections lost and quietly conceded. And few listened when former President Donald Trump tried to stoke baseless allegations of electoral fraud.

5. Realtors, homeowners lose a friend with Owens’ death -

Veteran Realtor Jim Owens has died, forever changing the personality of real residential real estate in the Nashville area. Owens was opinionated, never in doubt and usually right. With a military background that ultimately led to his death, he negotiated real estate with an old school attitude, yet he embraced new technology and strongly embraced the Realtors Code of Ethics.

6. Railroads reject sick time demands, raising chance of strike -

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The major freight railroads appear unwilling to give track maintenance workers much more than they received in the initial contract they rejected last week, increasing the chances of a strike.

7. Social Security benefits to jump by 8.7% next year -

WASHINGTON (AP) — Millions of Social Security recipients will get an 8.7% boost in their benefits in 2023, a historic increase but a gain that will be eaten up in part by the rising cost of everyday living.

8. Ferreira nets two goals, Dynamo topple Nashville 2-1 -

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Sebastian Ferreira's two goals helped lead the Houston Dynamo to a 2-1 victory over Nashville on Sunday.

Ferreira scored on a penalty in the 30th minute and on a breakout in the 39th minute, assisted by Darwin Quintero.

9. Pressure mounts on US railroads and unions to reach a deal -

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Freight railroads and their unions are facing increasing pressure from business groups and the White House to settle their contract dispute before Friday's looming strike deadline.

10. Top Davidson County residential sales for August 2022 -
