Bonds sounded their loudest warning bell yet of recession on Wednesday, when the yield on the 10-year Treasury briefly fell below the two-year yield. Such a thing is rare: Investors usually demand more in interest for tying up their money in longer-term debt. When yields get "inverted," market watchers say a recession may be a year or two away.

25. Big banks saved $3.6B in taxes last quarter under new law -

NEW YORK (AP) — The nation's six big Wall Street banks posted record, or near record, profits in the first quarter, and they can thank one person in particular: President Donald Trump.

While higher interest rates allowed banks to earn more from lending in the first quarter, the main boost to bank came from the billions of dollars they saved in taxes under the tax law Trump signed in December. Combined, the six banks saved at least $3.59 billion last quarter, according to an Associated Press estimate, using the bank's tax rates going back to 2015.

34. Banks lead US stocks slightly higher; oil slumps -

Banks and other financial companies led U.S. stocks slightly higher Wednesday, snapping a two-day losing streak for the market.

The latest gains were partially offset by a slide in energy companies following a steep slump in the price of U.S. crude oil, which fell 5.1 percent, its biggest single-day drop in nearly three months.

NEW YORK (AP) — Sometimes a little fear is healthy for stock investors.

Nine days ago, after a series of sharp sell-offs, the Standard & Poor's 500 index was down 7.4 percent from its September record as fears of a global economic slowdown intensified. Stocks have surged back this week, thanks to strong corporate earnings, and on Friday the S&P 500 had its best gain in nearly two years.

71. Like stocks, junk bonds show investor jitters -

NEW YORK (AP) — The stock market isn't the only place that's been signaling jitters among investors. The $2.3 trillion market for risky U.S. corporate debt has also been under pressure.

A five-year rally in junk bonds abruptly stalled last month. As with other higher-risk investments, investors have pulled back mainly because they worry about the end of the Federal Reserve's policy of near-zero interest rates. Investors expect the central bank to raise rates sometime next year, and that means the value of bonds currently held in portfolios will fall.

73. Tennessee diamond dealer sued over pricing -

NASHVILLE (AP) - A Tennessee jewelry store is being sued after a customer accused them of selling diamonds for more than the jewels are worth.

Nashville resident James Wells filed the case Tuesday against Genesis Diamonds claiming the store committed fraud and violated the state's consumer protection law by allegedly using "bogus certifications and appraisals" to sell diamonds.
