8. Raytheon and United Technologies to create a defense giant -

WALTHAM, Mass. (AP) — Raytheon and United Technologies will join to create a massive aerospace and defense company in a sector that is already rapidly consolidating.

The combined company, which will count among its portfolio of weaponry the F-35 fighter jet engines, Patriot and Tomahawk missile systems in addition to space suits and intelligence technology as well as Pratt & Whitney engines used in both commercial and military aircraft, anticipates annual revenue of $74 billion if approved.

13. Preliminary report: Ethiopia crew followed Boeing procedures -

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) — The pilots of a doomed Ethiopian Airlines jet followed all of Boeing's recommended procedures when the plane started to nose dive but still couldn't save it, according to a preliminary report released Thursday by the Ethiopian government. The plane crashed just six minutes after takeoff, killing all 157 people on board.

Boeing and U.S. aviation regulators say the company needs more time to finish changes in a flight-control system suspected of playing a role in two deadly crashes.

It was a warm Tennessee night in April of 1992 when 23-year-old Larry Randle got into his maroon Ford Thunderbird – the first car he ever owned – and drove a few miles to a friend’s house in his hometown of Martin, Tennessee to have a few beers and watch a basketball game on TV. NASHVILLE (AP) — Gov. Bill Haslam is kicking off his annual public budget hearings next week as he gets ready to put together his annual spending plan for the state of Tennessee.

Sixteen agencies are scheduled to present their budget requests on Monday and Tuesday. The remaining 10 departments are scheduled to appear on Nov. 21 and Nov. 22.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Wal-Mart is passing the chairmanship of the world's largest retailer from one family member of the late founder Sam Walton to another.

The company said that board Chairman Rob Walton will step down and be succeeded by Vice Chairman Greg Penner, who is his son-in-law.

87. How GM's ignition switch redesign went wrong -

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors' deadly ignition switch flaws emerged from an effort to improve its cars.

As the company began developing new small cars in the late 1990s, it listened to customers who complained about "cheap-feeling" switches that required too much effort to turn. GM set about making switches that would work more smoothly and give drivers the impression that they were better designed, a GM switch engineer testified in a lawsuit deposition in the spring of 2013.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. Senate subcommittee that's investigating the General Motors ignition switch recalls says it will hold a second hearing on July 17.

The Commerce Committee's Consumer Protection and Product Safety Subcommittee likely will summon GM CEO Mary Barra for a return appearance. Former U.S. Attorney Anton Valukas, who investigated the problem for GM, also is a likely to appear.

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors has suspended two engineers with pay in the first disciplinary action linked to its delayed recall of thousands of small cars for a deadly ignition switch problem.

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors excluded the Saturn Ion from a Feb. 13 recall for faulty ignition switches after engineers inexplicably failed to look at fatal crashes involving the compact car.

The cars were recalled two weeks later, after another inquiry found four crashes involving 2004 Ions that killed four people, according to a GM chronology of the recall posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website Wednesday night.
