DETROIT (AP) — Only two weeks of a lengthy strike against General Motors took place in the third quarter, but that was enough to dent the company's net profit by about $1 billion.

GM's third-quarter net income fell 7% as a strike by the United Auto Workers union brought its U.S. factories to a standstill.

3. Walgreens to shutter in-store clinics, add Jenny Craig sites -

Walgreens will shutter nearly 40% of the clinics in its stores as the drugstore chain cuts costs and shifts to other businesses it believes will draw more people through its doors.

The company said Monday that it will close 150 Walgreens-run clinics by the end of the year, but it will keep open more than 200 that are run in partnership with health care providers.

5. Slowing economy, trade wars, drag on US rail companies -

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The slowing economy and ongoing trade disputes are dragging railroad profits down in the second half of the year.

Two railroads, Union Pacific and CSX, have reported declining profit and revenue this week as they hauled less grain, imported goods and other products.

60. Big banks saved $3.6B in taxes last quarter under new law -

NEW YORK (AP) — The nation's six big Wall Street banks posted record, or near record, profits in the first quarter, and they can thank one person in particular: President Donald Trump.

While higher interest rates allowed banks to earn more from lending in the first quarter, the main boost to bank came from the billions of dollars they saved in taxes under the tax law Trump signed in December. Combined, the six banks saved at least $3.59 billion last quarter, according to an Associated Press estimate, using the bank's tax rates going back to 2015.

DETROIT (AP) — Shares of General Motors hit an all-time high Tuesday as investors focused on a $2.5 billion third-quarter pretax profit and ignored a big accounting loss.

The Detroit automaker's $3 billion net loss came from a $5.4 billion charge for selling Opel and Vauxhall to France's PSA Group, which closed in August. But with that backed out and before taxes, the company made $1.32 per share, trouncing Wall Street estimates. Analysts polled by FactSet expected $1.11 per share.
