1. Parkland school shooter to get life sentence for killing 17 -

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz will be sentenced to life without parole for the 2018 murder of 17 people at Parkland's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, after the jury said Thursday that it could not unanimously agree that he should be executed — a decision that left some parents in tears as they exited the courtroom.

2. Legal Aid Society promotes Oswald -

Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands, Tennessee’s largest nonprofit law firm, has promoted Zac Oswald to senior deputy director of client services.

Oswald will continue to lead the firm’s housing practice group while taking on additional leadership responsibilities across the firm. Oswald had previously served as managing attorney of Legal Aid Society’s Gallatin office since 2018 and joined the firm as a staff attorney in 2014.

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Democrats pushed ahead Wednesday with legislation that would ban certain semi-automatic weapons as they considered their most far-reaching response yet to this summer's series of mass shootings.

4. Biden celebration of new gun law clouded by latest shooting -

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden welcomed a crowd to the White House lawn Monday to showcase a new law meant to reduce gun violence, celebrating "real progress" after years of inaction. But he also lamented the country remains "awash in weapons of war" — with the 16-day-old law already overshadowed by yet another horrific mass shooting.

Bass, Berry & Sims PLC has appointed Kevin H. Douglas to serve as chair of the firm’s Corporate & Securities Practice Group.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says it appears the suspect in Florida's deadly school shooting was "mentally disturbed."

Trump tweeted Thursday about the shooting at a Parkland, Florida, high school. A former student opened fire Wednesday with an AR-15 rifle, killing 17 people. The 19-year-old was charged Thursday morning.

93. Blackburn still the favorite for UT’s AD position -

Tennessee has its search firm and its search committee is in place to find the replacement for Dave Hart as the university’s athletic director.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Years of steady job gains have finally begun to benefit a wider range of Americans, including those with less education and in lower-paying jobs.

A second straight month of robust hiring — 255,000 jobs added in July — pointed to employer confidence that suggested that the economy is powering through a slump that struck early this year. The unemployment rate remained a low 4.9 percent, the Labor Department said Friday.

Michael Brody-Waite, former CEO of InQuicker.com, will be The Nashville Entrepreneur Center’s new CEO.
