NASHVILLE (AP) — Vanderbilt has hired Notre Dame defensive coordinator Clark Lea as its new football coach, bringing back a Nashville native and former Commodores fullback to revive the program.

Lea will be introduced next week at a news conference. He currently is busy helping No. 2 Notre Dame (10-0) prepare to play No. 4 Clemson on Saturday in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game with a spot in the College Football Playoff on the line.

28. Vanderbilt defensive analyst Lewis, 57, dies of cancer -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Vanderbilt senior defensive analyst Osia Lewis died Sunday following a lengthy battle with cancer, the school announced. He was 57.

Lewis also was a special consultant to Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason. He joined the Commodores in 2016 as a senior defensive assistant and outside linebackers coach.

NASHVILLE (AP) — Vanderbilt will be without a trio of Commodores for the rest of the season because of injuries.

Coach Derek Mason said Tuesday that backup running back Jamauri Wakefield, linebacker Colin Anderson and wide receiver Amir Abdur-Rahman will not return. The injuries obviously hurt Vanderbilt's depth as the Commodores (0-2, 0-1 Southeastern Conference) hosts No. 4 LSU (3-0, 0-0) on Saturday.

NASHVILLE (AP) — Vanderbilt tight end Turner Cockrell died Thursday at home after battling cancer for more than a year. He was 21.

Cockrell was surrounded by family in Acworth, Georgia, when he died. The Commodores were told of Cockrell's death at a team meeting Thursday afternoon, Vanderbilt spokesman Larry Leathers said.

It was Dec. 4, and the Commodore faithful had gathered at the Student Life Center on campus to hear players and coaches discuss the team’s upcoming Independence Bowl trip to Shreveport, Louisiana, to play North Carolina State on the day after Christmas.

You might not know this, but Vanderbilt football coach Derek Mason has a lot in common with Nashville Criminal Court Judge Randall Wyatt.
