12. Trial in killing of Tennessee prison official moved to 2021 -

RIPLEY (AP) — The trial of a Tennessee convict charged with killing a corrections official before escaping prison on a tractor has been delayed until next year.

Curtis Watson had been scheduled to face trial Oct. 26 in the killing of Tennessee Department of Correction administrator Debra Johnson. Her body was found in her home on the grounds of a state prison in Henning in August 2019.

14. Lawsuit filed in Tennessee prison administrator's killing -

MEMPHIS (AP) — The daughter of a Tennessee corrections administrator who authorities say was killed during a prison escape has sued the facility and its warden for negligence in her death.

Shernaye Johnson has filed a lawsuit in federal court seeking a jury trial and $5 million in damages for the death of her mother, Debra Johnson, whose body was found in her home on the grounds of the West Tennessee State Penitentiary in rural Henning in August 2019.

Nashville Mayor Megan Barry has appointed Erik Cole as chief resilience officer in the new Office of Resilience.

In case anyone’s keeping stats, Senate leadership soundly defeated House leadership this session in the gas tax/tax cut battle.

Whether this is a forerunner to a Republican gubernatorial primary remains to be seen as Senate Majority Leader Mark Norris and House Speaker Beth Harwell weigh decisions. It’s not as if they’d be facing off against each other, though, since businessman Bill Lee and former Economic and Community Development Commissioner Randy Boyd are definitely in the race and not hurting for money.

It seems a faction of the Republican supermajority just hasn’t gotten a fair hearing – from their own party – on opposition to Gov. Bill Haslam’s IMPROVE Act, which contains a dreaded gas and diesel tax increase to rebuild the state’s roads and bridges. It’s the gas tax versus the surplus, which is pretty big at $1 billion in one-time money and another billion in extra recurring money.

85. Haslam transportation plan survives key House vote -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Republican Gov. Bill Haslam's sweeping transportation funding proposal has survived a key vote in the state House but without a provision to hike the state's gas and diesel taxes.
The proposal advanced on a 5-4 vote in the House Transportation Subcommittee on Wednesday with House Speaker Pro Tem Curtis Johnson of Clarksville joining the panel to cast the tiebreaking vote.
The change to the governor's bill would dedicate a small portion of sales tax collections to transportation projects.
Haslam has expressed concerns about changing the state's traditional way of paying for roads at the fuel pump, so it's likely that his administration will try to bring back the fuel tax proposal in later committees.
A rival proposal by Republican Rep. David Hawk of Greenville was defeated on a 5-3 vote.
