1. Gospel music preps Simmons for NFL violence -

Call it the calm before the storm. As violent and dominating a player as Jeffery Simmons can be, one might think he marches to hard-core rap strains of NWA or Eminem. Or maybe Simmons gets fired up for football with the hard rock sounds of AC/DC or Guns ‘n Roses.

2. 'Car guy' Biden touts electric vehicles at Detroit auto show -

DETROIT (AP) — President Joe Biden, a "car guy" with his own vintage Corvette, showcased his administration's efforts to promote electric vehicles during a visit Wednesday to the Detroit auto show.

3. NIL deals put just a few bucks in most athletes' pockets -

Texas offensive lineman Christian Jones remembers walking up to Bijan Robinson not long ago and asking for a lift, figuring it was least the All-American running back could do for one of the big guys doing all the blocking.

4. Who gets student loan forgiveness? Relief prompts joy, angst -

For Nick Marcil, the cancellation of $10,000 of his student loans could mean at last moving out of his parents' house.

Marcil, 24, studied at a Pennsylvania state college, earned scholarships and worked jobs while pursuing degrees in education but still owed $18,000 before Wednesday's action by the Biden administration to erase some student loans.

5. Amy Grant, U2, George Clooney among Kennedy Center honorees -

WASHINGTON (AP) — It's going to be a "Beautiful Day" for the band U2 and four other artists when they receive this year's Kennedy Center Honors in December.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced Thursday that the Irish rock band along with actor George Clooney, singers Gladys Knight and Amy Grant and composer Tania León are being honored this year.

6. Why captions are suddenly everywhere and how they got there -

NEW YORK (AP) — People with hearing loss have a new ally in their efforts to navigate the world: Captions that aren't limited to their television screens and streaming services.

The COVID pandemic disrupted daily life for people everywhere, but many of those with hearing loss took the resulting isolation especially hard. "When everyone wears a mask they are completely unintelligible to me," said Pat Olken of Sharon, Massachusetts, whose hearing aids were insufficient. (A new cochlear implant has helped her a lot.)

7. Southerners are conditioned to believe ‘Big Lie’ -

The claim that Donald Trump won the 2020 election but was cheated out of it is, as his former attorney general Bill Barr inelegantly but accurately put it, bulls***.

They don’t call it the Big Lie for nothing.

8. New SBC President commits to move sex abuse reforms forward -

ANAHEIM, California (AP) — The new president of the Southern Baptist Convention said Wednesday he will accelerate sex abuse reforms in the nation's largest Protestant denomination.

Texas pastor Bart Barber's first priority: to assemble a panel of people -- Southern Baptist leaders and experts -- to shepherd this work for the whole convention as mandated by thousands of representatives from local SBC churches.

9. ‘They don’t know my Madison’ -

Sometimes all it takes is a few people to see things not just as they were, but what they could be. To have reverence for the past while guiding growth in the future.

Nancy VanReece is one of those people. She moved to Nashville in 1986 to start her own radio promotion and marketing agency out of college in Texas. Soon she was in publishing, started a small label and sold it to her partners after two years. She then joined the performing rights organization BMI, where she ended up working for 10 years in business and health care licensing.

10. Texas shooting is new test for Biden's long battle over guns -

WASHINGTON (AP) — Joe Biden, then the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, surveyed the collection of black, military-style rifles on display in the middle of the room as he denounced the sale of guns whose "only real function is to kill human beings at a ferocious pace."

11. Holton leads Vanderbilt past Mississippi 3-1 in SEC tourney -

12. Yellen's global tax plan meets resistance abroad and at home -

KOENIGSWINTER, Germany (AP) — Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen celebrated a "historic day" last summer when more than 100 nations agreed to a global minimum tax deal, aimed at putting the world's countries on a more equal footing in attracting and keeping multinational companies.
