Last year: Coach Mike Vrabel just missed the playoffs in his debut season despite having enough issues to distract any veteran head coach. The Titans opened with the longest game (in overall time) in NFL history, losing top pass catcher TE Delanie Walker to season-ending injury in the process. Their most-experienced receiver, Rishard Matthews, was released at his demand, and DC Dean Pees was in hospital for the loss in Indianapolis. QB Marcus Mariota also missed three starts, including the season finale with a playoff berth on line.

11. Raines retiring as dean of Belmont’s business school -

Pat Raines, dean of Belmont University’s Jack C. Massey College of Business, has announced his retirement after 16 years of service to the school.

During Raines’ tenure, the school has received accolades from Princeton Review, BusinessWeek and Entrepreneurship magazine for having some of the top business programs in the country. The College of Business’s undergraduate enrollment has grown by more than 100%, and the graduate enrollment has increased by nearly 80%.

Davidson County General Sessions judges have unanimously elected Judge Melissa Blackburn to serve as presiding judge through Sept. 2019.

Blackburn has been serving as presiding judge since Dec. 2017 when Judge Angelita Blackshear Dalton was elevated to the 20th District Criminal Court by Gov. Bill Haslam. She was elected to serve as judge of the Division II General Sessions Court in 2014.

65. Legislature losing some powerful, familiar members -

A shakeup in leadership is looming for the state Legislature, though it may portend more of a change in personalities than party strength.

In the House, longtime Rep. Craig Fitzhugh, the affable Democrat from Ripley in West Tennessee, is preparing for a 2018 gubernatorial run, a move that would knock him out of his House seat, at least temporarily, and the position as Democratic Caucus leader.

72. Guard promotes attorney to brigadier general -

Kurt Winstead, a founding member of the Nashville law firm Rudy Winstead Turner, PLLC, has been promoted to brigadier general in the Tennessee National Guard.

Winstead began his career with the Tennessee National Guard in 1990 when he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Judge Advocate General Corp. His first assignment was as the judge advocate general for the 194th Engineer Brigade, now headquartered in Jackson. Throughout his more than 26 years of service, Winstead has served in numerous assignments culminating as the senior staff judge advocate at the Joint Force Headquarters in Nashville.

74. Senate Education Committee to vote on voucher bills -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Tennessee lawmakers are slated to vote on several school-choice proposals, including vouchers bills moving through the legislature.

The Senate Education Committee is scheduled on Wednesday to consider two bills which would allow low-income kids to use tax dollars for private schools. The bill sponsored by Sen. Todd Gardenhire, a Republican from Chattanooga, would allow poor children zoned for the lowest-performing schools to get a voucher. A bill sponsored by Republican Sen. Brian Kelsey, of Germantown, would limit the voucher program to low-income kids in Shelby County.

92. Lanquist named general counsel for Bar Association -

Edward D. Lanquist, Jr., managing shareholder at Patterson Intellectual Property Law, P.C., has been appointed general counsel of the Tennessee Bar Association.

The general counsel is chosen by the president of the TBA and serves a volunteer, one-year term. As general counsel, Lanquist will provide counsel to the board and board members and be actively involved in governance of the organization.

93. Clarksville's Reeves-Maybin confident in himself, Vol teammates -

Clarksville’s Jalen Reeves-Maybin is in full football mode as he prepares for his senior season at Tennessee.

After choosing not to enter the 2016 NFL Draft, Reeves-Maybin graduated in May after three years and is focused on helping UT win an SEC championship and improving his stock in next year’s draft. He’s also taking a few graduate courses, nothing too taxing.
