1. Biden, the optimist, wrestles with election, other worries -

WASHINGTON (AP) — It was his last stop of the day on a West Coast swing, a backyard fundraiser at a TV producer's home in Los Angeles, and President Joe Biden was telling the crowd how tough the past few years have been.

2. Gloves off, Biden embraces tough tone on 'MAGA Republicans' -

WASHINGTON (AP) — In recent days, President Joe Biden has sharpened his attacks against Donald Trump and the so-called MAGA Republicans for posing a threat to democracy. He's likened the philosophy undergirding the dominant strain of the modern-day GOP to "semi-fascism."

3. State unemployment numbers hold steady -

Tennessee’s seasonally adjusted statewide unemployment rate remained unchanged for July 2022, data from the Department of Labor and Workforce Development reveals.

The rate has held steady at 3.3% for the third consecutive month.

4. Rejected by courts, retirees take last shot to save pensions -

WASHINGTON (AP) — Dave Muffley thought he had it made when it came to a solid retirement. The Indiana man spent roughly 30 years as a salaried maintenance technician for Delphi Corp., a subsidiary of General Motors Corp., and expected to retire with a comfortable income by the time he hit 62.

5. Sky-high diesel prices squeeze truckers, farmers, consumers -

NEW YORK (AP) — When long-haul trucker Deb LaBree sets out on the road to deliver pharmaceuticals, she has strategies to hold down costs. She avoids the West Coast and the Northeast, where diesel prices are highest. She organizes her delivery route to minimize "deadheading" — driving an empty truck in between deliveries.

6. How Tennessee, other U.S. states have banned, limited, protected abortion -

The U.S. Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that had provided a constitutional right to abortion. Friday's ruling is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states. In anticipation of the decision, several states led by Democrats have taken steps to protect abortion access. The decision also sets up the potential for legal fights between the states over whether providers and those who help women obtain abortions can be sued or prosecuted.
